Best editors

1. Alan Edward Bell has edited feature films for nearly 30 years – including “The Hunger Games” “The Amazing Spiderman” “Water for Elephants and 15 more. Bell has a parallel career augmenting his own and others' work with composites and other visual effects, landing him VFX supervisor credits on the indie charmer Little Manhattan and the Julia Roberts thriller Duplicity "I think that should be an editor's foremost purpose—to create a connection between the characters on screen and the audience. If you do that, and everything else is done properly, then you'll end up with a movie that's really compelling."

2.Aarti Bajaj is an Indian film editor and has done over 30 films. Her filmography accounts for some of the best films of the last few years-"Paanch", "Black Friday", "Jab we met","Gulaal", "Love aaj kal" and "Rockstar" to name a few.
" I want comfortable time to work. I still have butterflies in my stomach before every project."

3.Michael Kahn is an American film editor. His credits range from TV's Hogan's Heroes to feature films .seasoned editor with two decades of experience. The secret to being a good editor, said Kahn, is to listen to the director and the film. “You have to feel it. Steven is tremendously feeling. He’s really good at that. I don’t want to do what Steven says; I want to do what he feels. The whole picture is done through feeling.”Spielberg described Kahn’s work on “Schindler’s List” as “his greatest and most sensitive” accomplishment.

Editing

Editing. It is organising footage into one continuous sequence to create a narrative for a film or tv show. Its its selecting raw footage and placing them in sequence order on a timeline.

Collage- joining pictures together to create meaning
Tempo- the time a shot is seen on screen

TIME
Linear- telling a story as it happens
media res- narrative is jumbled up

elements of editing
-Time in-Starting point- The point when action starts in a frame.
-Time out-Ending point- The point when action ends in a frame.
-Continuity editing-When the viewed footage flows continuously, so that the narrative is clear to the audience.
-Master shot-The first shot kicked off during a shoot.A film recording of an entire scene from start to finish from an angle that keeps all players in view.
-Insert shot-A shot from a different angle that appears in a scene to break the monotony.
-Match on action-Cutting between different views of the same moment in an action without disrupting audience view. Two different views of the same action.
-Superimposition- This is a transition.Placing one thing over the other typically in such a way that both are evidently seen.
-Long Take-A shot which unfolds in real time for about 8-10 seconds with out any cuts.
-Reverse editing-A cut showing what the character is looking at, followed by a reverse shot of the character them selves looking at it.
-Cross cutting editing-Edit two different sequences together to show that they are connected.
-Ellipsis editing-Movement and action unnecessary to the telling of a story will often be removed by editing.
-Montage editing-Montage is a technique in film editing in which a series of short shots are edited into a sequence to condense space, time & information. It could be a Juxtaposition.
-Associative Montage-The juxtaposition of two contrasting images which can be interpreted as having a similar thematic meaning.

-Cutaway-A cutaway is video scene that cuts away to relevant images or footage.A cutaway is used as a buffer between to add interest and info.
-Non- Continuity editing-When the viewed footage does not flow continuously.
-Flash back-A flash back in a movie is a scene that has happened prior to the current event that is going on in the movie.
-Flash forward-Interrupts present action- shifts the plot to the future.
-Jump Cut editing-A jump cut is a cut in film editing in which two sequential shots of the same subject are taken from camera positions that vary only slightly.
-Parallel editing(cross cutting)-is the technique of alternating two or more scenes that often happen simultaneously but in different locations.
-Time-lapse video-is when the playback of a video clip appears to be faster than the natural speed of the action that has been captured.
-Freeze Frame-A single frame forming a motionless image from a video.

Transitions

  • Straight cutting – to show realism, in conversations etc.
  • Graphic match – when 2 shots match graphically, often with an overlap transition (ex shot of eyeball, then shot of the sun (same size/shape = to show their relationship)
  • Overlap/dissolve – makes a softer transition, to show ellipsis or time passing.
  • Wipe – often used to show new day or new scene/location   (sideways wipe)
  • Fade in/out (fade to black or appear from black – often used to communicate ending or beginning)
  • Flash – to show flashbacks or flash-forwards (to show thoughts or memories)  (flashes to white)
  • Slow Motion
  • Long take/short take.
Special Effects
  • B&w –often used to show memory or time period
  • Contrast – to altar the lighting (or contrast = very light lights and dark or darks sometimes with memories
  •  Color - to add a color filter to show a specific mood. Example ‘The ring’ – many scenes are very blue-ish, which show sterile/coldness etc.
  • Animation – titles of shows or cartoons
  • CGI – computer generated images (example = avatar, planet of apes, polar express.
  • Fast forward/slow motion – speeding up or slowing down footage.
  • Ghost trail – see multiple actions (overlapped) to show someone drunk or on drugs .
  • Blur – to show un-clarity, or fuzzy memory/flashback.

I will be using Final cut pro for my film and Adobe after effect for my title. My film will be shot in a linear manner with continuity editing and a few jumpcuts.

Sound

Throughout my opening sequence I will have Diegetic sound, A song- tonight you belong to me. This song has a creepy tone to it which goes well with the story.

When Shreya gets an image of her back, I will use sound effects for a dramatic sense. This should highlight the thrilling experience.

CASTING

SHREYA-

I have three options

Aafsha. She is really good at acting and takes on roles very seriously. She has acted in my preliminary task and did really well. However, is very busy with classes that she takes which makes it difficult to schedule a proper time for the shoot.

Diya. She matches a few of characteristics of Shreya and is very keen on taking the role of Shreya. However, has no acting experience and is busy with studies.

Kuhu. My inspiration for Shreya comes from kuhu (from her personal experience). She is ready to commit time to shoot for my opening sequence and is confident that she can do the role. She has acted before in my previous short skits that I have made with friends so I know the acting level that I can expect from her.

FINAL DECISION-
I will be taking kuhu as her characteristics match Shreya's which means that acting the role of Shreya should come on more naturally. Most importantly, I need someone who can commit time so I can shoot my opening sequence conveniently without worrying about matching schedules or how much time I have. When I shoot, I want to take all the retakes I need to and time I need, to find the best shot.

STALKER
I will not be showing the face of the stalker but I need someone who is tall and looks like a strong 18 year old who is capable of trying to kidnap a 17 year old girl. I have chosen Abhishek Shukla because he is ready to take on the role of the stalker and give the time commitment I need.

Iconography

Art direction is directing the composition of a set/location to make as much of in context with the mood as possible. In art direction, minute details matter and can make a huge difference if noticed by the audience.

Iconography refers to the specific items of the art direction that either take the story ahead or have a relevance in conveying something about the actor/situation.

In my opening sequence, when she receives the image from the unknown number indicating that he is behind her right now, it shows that she is in trouble/trapped and this is what is going to take the story forward.

location recci

The story takes place at Shreya's house and so I took into consideration three house locations. Most of the scenes are in the room and near the door.
Location 1-

location 2-

location 3-

I have chosen location 3 due its availability at all times and huge space around the house for me to work in. It fits the upper middle class group of Shreya.

Hair and makeup references

For my opening sequence, I want my protagonist to have heavy makeup but not entirely so it is clear that she has come home after the party has ended. The hair needs to be a bit messy and the makeup needs to be a bit worn off for a more realistic view.
The makeup should definitely include a dark shade of lipstick to go with her black jumpsuit. A glittery eye makeup would complement her big eyes. Something like this-

"just came back from a wild party" kinda look. She loves to dance and that should be seen through her hair too. For the hair I want a messy hair look, something like this-

Mood board for opening sequence

The first picture of a stalker in a hoodie standing behind the girl who is Shreya, in this case. My last scene will look something like this. Ending with the stalker standing behind her.
The second picture is of the stalker looking at the women( Shreya) entering her house as in my opening sequence, the bell rings few seconds after she enters, indicating someone was following or waiting for her to reach home.
There are two pictures, one of Shreya in a black jumpsuit and one of the stalker in his grey hoodie. These are the clothes that they will wear during the shoot.
The picture of the silver gift boxes are how Shreya receives the message from the stalker in the opening sequence.

All these pictures summarise my opening sequence.

Mood board for Shreya

The first image is of her fashion style which is similar to the one in the opening sequence. It shows that she likes to follow the trend and has an elegant flair to her everyday style.
The second image shows that she likes to socialise and has many friends. Her favourite thing to do is spend time with her best friends.
The third image shows her at a party. She loves dancing and going out.
Fourth image shows her makeup style when she is going out and is similar to the one in the opening sequence.
The last image is of her studying. She makes sure that she removes time to study and get good enough grades to keep her family happy.

my colour theory

For my opening sequence I want to mainly focus on BLACK and WHITE.
I want the black to represent danger, unsafe ,mystery and the stalker but the white to show comfort and safety.
When she enters her house its dark, till the time she reaches her safe place, her room. Her room is bright and familiar but when the stalker invades her safe place, it starts fading into a darker tone.
The reason why she is wearing black is because it is a common colour for a night out and to show more contrast with her skin colour and clothes.
The silver boxes seem appealing but are misleading as it opens to a threat.
The dark colours at the start and end help make it look more thrilling and horror.

THE TITLE

I had to research a lot in order to find a title for my film that I would actually be happy with.
My opening sequence is a thriller/mystery genre and so I first decided to search other similar genres films to find some inspiration.
Next, I searched a few words related to my narrative. Such as trapped, mine, away, puzzle, clues, pyshco, HIS, evil, obsession and etc. I further searched their synonyms to see if there's a better and more interesting word related to this.
I did this because I loved the titles, Insidious, oculus and conjuring. I needed something like this but I couldn't find anything through google or other existing movies so I decided to check Wattpad. Wattpad is an app where anyone can write stories or read other people's stories. This allows a large variety of people to express themselves and gives a huge choice for readers. I scanned the stories where I put the tag- stalker, to see related stories. The names were exactly what I was looking for.
One word in particular caught my eye. 'UNHINGED'.
The word means - Mentally unbalanced; deranged
It is the perfect word for my stalker and I knew I had to use it!

So I present you the name of may film

UNHINGED

Media language

Media language is the way in which the meaning of a media text is conveyed to the audience. Context of text should match the audience in mind.
Saussure's theory: semiotics is the study of signs and their meaning in the society. A sign can be divided into two parts to give out 2 levels of meaning to a media text.First, Signifier(physical existence)- it is basically what we see in front of us. It is the form the sign takes. Second, signified( the mental concept)- an idea or concept associated with the signifier.

Peirce theory: Signs can be categorised into three categories and they should be treated differently.

  1. iconic signs- signs where meaning is based on similarity of appearance. Resembles what it stands for.( a literal sign)
  2. Indexical signs- closely related to a concept they signify. Implies some other object or event.
  3. Symbolic/ Arbitrary signs- they have a conventional link. They could be symbols for whole or written text. A learned sign.

Derrida's theory: Audience deconstruct a text within contexts of its logos. (logos= symbols/signs). Therefore texts don't have a single meaning but many meanings. Polysemic in nature based on these contexts and how audience receive them.

Barthes theory.
  1. First level of analysis. Denotation is the literal meaning.Describing what you see through direct observation. what the audience can visually see.
  2. Second level of analysis. Connotation( emotional meaning)

colour theory

Colour theory helps simplify complex stories. It sets the tone, evokes emotions and helps communicate film ideas.Colours show a character's journey and communicates film ideas.

There are warm colours and cool colours, and together they make up the colour wheel. The colour wheel is used to help decide the colour schemes in various media products.
Basic colours are simply represented using a colour wheel-

COLOUR SCHEME
  1. Complementary colours. These are the opposite hues on the colour wheel.
2.Analogous Colours. These are groups of three colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel, sharing a common colour.

3.Triadic Colours. These are three colours spaced evenly around the colour wheel.

4.Monochromatic Colours are all the colours of a single hue.

Mis-en-scene pt2

  • Blocking. The meaningful arrangement of the actors on the sets called blocking. The way in which the actors are positioned can show the dominance of one character over another, the importance of family or religion and other relationship possibilities.
  • Composition. The organisation of objects, actors and space within the frame. Every frame in a film should maintain a balance of symmetry. This refers to having an equal distribution of light, colour, objects and/or figures in a shot.
  • Unbalanced composition can be used to emphasise certain elements of a film that the director wishes to be given particular attention to.
  • Colour. Light affects the way colours are rendered, both in terms of hue and depth, and can focus attention on particular elements of the composition.
  • Acting. It is the actor's duty to bring his or her character to life within the framework of the story.  The emotional input dictates how strongly the audience feels about the film. Acting mainly depends upon gesture, movement , expression and voice.
  • Method acting. The method actor's job is to become one with the character's mannerisms, dress ,upbringing and etc. Essentially, she or he must be that character to the point where they are no longer distinguishable.
  • Non method acting is much more similar to acting on the stage. It relies on a more conspicuous approach to get the director's point across. They will overreact and hyperbolise certain characteristics in an effort to dramatise or create humour. It was more common in early, silent cinema. In the absence of sound and voice, meaning was conveyed, often in an exaggerated way, through gesture and expression.
