Best editors

1. Alan Edward Bell has edited feature films for nearly 30 years – including “The Hunger Games” “The Amazing Spiderman” “Water for Elephants and 15 more. Bell has a parallel career augmenting his own and others' work with composites and other visual effects, landing him VFX supervisor credits on the indie charmer Little Manhattan and the Julia Roberts thriller Duplicity "I think that should be an editor's foremost purpose—to create a connection between the characters on screen and the audience. If you do that, and everything else is done properly, then you'll end up with a movie that's really compelling."

2.Aarti Bajaj is an Indian film editor and has done over 30 films. Her filmography accounts for some of the best films of the last few years-"Paanch", "Black Friday", "Jab we met","Gulaal", "Love aaj kal" and "Rockstar" to name a few.
" I want comfortable time to work. I still have butterflies in my stomach before every project."

3.Michael Kahn is an American film editor. His credits range from TV's Hogan's Heroes to feature films .seasoned editor with two decades of experience. The secret to being a good editor, said Kahn, is to listen to the director and the film. “You have to feel it. Steven is tremendously feeling. He’s really good at that. I don’t want to do what Steven says; I want to do what he feels. The whole picture is done through feeling.”Spielberg described Kahn’s work on “Schindler’s List” as “his greatest and most sensitive” accomplishment.

Editing

Editing. It is organising footage into one continuous sequence to create a narrative for a film or tv show. Its its selecting raw footage and placing them in sequence order on a timeline.

Collage- joining pictures together to create meaning
Tempo- the time a shot is seen on screen

TIME
Linear- telling a story as it happens
media res- narrative is jumbled up

elements of editing
-Time in-Starting point- The point when action starts in a frame.
-Time out-Ending point- The point when action ends in a frame.
-Continuity editing-When the viewed footage flows continuously, so that the narrative is clear to the audience.
-Master shot-The first shot kicked off during a shoot.A film recording of an entire scene from start to finish from an angle that keeps all players in view.
-Insert shot-A shot from a different angle that appears in a scene to break the monotony.
-Match on action-Cutting between different views of the same moment in an action without disrupting audience view. Two different views of the same action.
-Superimposition- This is a transition.Placing one thing over the other typically in such a way that both are evidently seen.
-Long Take-A shot which unfolds in real time for about 8-10 seconds with out any cuts.
-Reverse editing-A cut showing what the character is looking at, followed by a reverse shot of the character them selves looking at it.
-Cross cutting editing-Edit two different sequences together to show that they are connected.
-Ellipsis editing-Movement and action unnecessary to the telling of a story will often be removed by editing.
-Montage editing-Montage is a technique in film editing in which a series of short shots are edited into a sequence to condense space, time & information. It could be a Juxtaposition.
-Associative Montage-The juxtaposition of two contrasting images which can be interpreted as having a similar thematic meaning.

-Cutaway-A cutaway is video scene that cuts away to relevant images or footage.A cutaway is used as a buffer between to add interest and info.
-Non- Continuity editing-When the viewed footage does not flow continuously.
-Flash back-A flash back in a movie is a scene that has happened prior to the current event that is going on in the movie.
-Flash forward-Interrupts present action- shifts the plot to the future.
-Jump Cut editing-A jump cut is a cut in film editing in which two sequential shots of the same subject are taken from camera positions that vary only slightly.
-Parallel editing(cross cutting)-is the technique of alternating two or more scenes that often happen simultaneously but in different locations.
-Time-lapse video-is when the playback of a video clip appears to be faster than the natural speed of the action that has been captured.
-Freeze Frame-A single frame forming a motionless image from a video.

Transitions

  • Straight cutting – to show realism, in conversations etc.
  • Graphic match – when 2 shots match graphically, often with an overlap transition (ex shot of eyeball, then shot of the sun (same size/shape = to show their relationship)
  • Overlap/dissolve – makes a softer transition, to show ellipsis or time passing.
  • Wipe – often used to show new day or new scene/location   (sideways wipe)
  • Fade in/out (fade to black or appear from black – often used to communicate ending or beginning)
  • Flash – to show flashbacks or flash-forwards (to show thoughts or memories)  (flashes to white)
  • Slow Motion
  • Long take/short take.
Special Effects
  • B&w –often used to show memory or time period
  • Contrast – to altar the lighting (or contrast = very light lights and dark or darks sometimes with memories
  •  Color - to add a color filter to show a specific mood. Example ‘The ring’ – many scenes are very blue-ish, which show sterile/coldness etc.
  • Animation – titles of shows or cartoons
  • CGI – computer generated images (example = avatar, planet of apes, polar express.
  • Fast forward/slow motion – speeding up or slowing down footage.
  • Ghost trail – see multiple actions (overlapped) to show someone drunk or on drugs .
  • Blur – to show un-clarity, or fuzzy memory/flashback.

I will be using Final cut pro for my film and Adobe after effect for my title. My film will be shot in a linear manner with continuity editing and a few jumpcuts.

Sound

Throughout my opening sequence I will have Diegetic sound, A song- tonight you belong to me. This song has a creepy tone to it which goes well with the story.

When Shreya gets an image of her back, I will use sound effects for a dramatic sense. This should highlight the thrilling experience.

CASTING

SHREYA-

I have three options

Aafsha. She is really good at acting and takes on roles very seriously. She has acted in my preliminary task and did really well. However, is very busy with classes that she takes which makes it difficult to schedule a proper time for the shoot.

Diya. She matches a few of characteristics of Shreya and is very keen on taking the role of Shreya. However, has no acting experience and is busy with studies.

Kuhu. My inspiration for Shreya comes from kuhu (from her personal experience). She is ready to commit time to shoot for my opening sequence and is confident that she can do the role. She has acted before in my previous short skits that I have made with friends so I know the acting level that I can expect from her.

FINAL DECISION-
I will be taking kuhu as her characteristics match Shreya's which means that acting the role of Shreya should come on more naturally. Most importantly, I need someone who can commit time so I can shoot my opening sequence conveniently without worrying about matching schedules or how much time I have. When I shoot, I want to take all the retakes I need to and time I need, to find the best shot.

STALKER
I will not be showing the face of the stalker but I need someone who is tall and looks like a strong 18 year old who is capable of trying to kidnap a 17 year old girl. I have chosen Abhishek Shukla because he is ready to take on the role of the stalker and give the time commitment I need.
